New College of Florida Cross Country opened its second season with a record-setting performance Friday morning at the Panther XC Invitational, hosted by South Florida State College at its Highlands Campus in Avon Park.

The NCF men captured the first team title in program history, placing six runners among the top seven individual finishers. Junior Cole Fleming won the men's 5K in his Mighty Banyan debut, becoming the first individual race winner in men's program history.

On the women's side, freshman Mireille Gomez placed second to become the first race medalist in the women's program history while recording the best individual finish by a Mighty Banyan runner. Sophomore Arianna Childs joined Gomez in the top 10 with a ninth-place finish.

MEN'S RECAP

Fleming set the pace for the Mighty Banyan men, winning the 5K in 16:42.66. The junior crossed the finish line nearly 15 seconds ahead of the runner-up to become NCF's first individual race champion.

Junior Natheer Suied placed third in 17:18.48, followed closely by freshman Jackson Smith, who finished fourth in his collegiate debut with a time of 17:19.14.

Junior Bryce Blalock and junior Julian Guinand finished fifth and sixth, respectively. Blalock crossed the line in 17:46.30, just ahead of Guinand Rincon at 17:46.56.

Freshman Keith Smith Jr. completed NCF's group of six medalists, placing seventh in his collegiate debut with a time of 18:07.09. The six medalists were the first in program history.

Sophomore Alex Llanos gave NCF seven runners inside the top eight, finishing eighth in 18:20.67. Freshman Jaxon Alonso placed ninth in his collegiate debut with a time of 18:43.31, while sophomore Pierce Mihailoff rounded out the Mighty Banyan contingent in 12th at 19:09.21.

NCF won the team championship with 19 points, finishing 25 points ahead of runner-up Lake-Sumter State. The Mighty Banyans recorded an average time of 17:22.

WOMEN'S RECAP

Gomez led the Mighty Banyan women across the finish line, completing the 5K in 21:17.98. Her runner-up finish surpassed the previous best individual finish in program history and earned NCF its first race medal.

Childs followed with a strong start to her sophomore campaign, finishing ninth in 23:20.64.

Freshman Eliza Larramendi-Cruz placed 19th in her collegiate debut with a time of 25:33.05, while sophomore Abby Retberg crossed the line in 20th at 25:54.36.

Freshman Rylie Yoachum completed her first collegiate race in 27:39.81 to place 24th, and junior Alicia Reynolds rounded out the NCF lineup with a 27th-place finish in 28:42.15.

The Mighty Banyans finished fourth in the team standings with 74 points and an average time of 24:45.
