BRUNSWICK, Ga. - The New College of Florida women's basketball team showed major improvements in a competitive match-up against College of Coastal Georgia.
The Banyans (3-6) looked to bounce back against the Mariners (5-5). New College dropped their previous to games to top rated Southeastern University and Webber International (VR).
New College got off to a slow start offensively. The Banyans connected on just 3 of their 13 first quarter shots. The team also struggled to maintain possession, turning the ball over five times, allowing the Mariners to jump out to a 24-9 lead at the conclusion of the quarter.
The Mighty Banyans bounced back in the second quarter. The New College offense forced Coastal Georgia's defense into tough situations, forcing the Mariners to commit nine fouls in the second. New College capitalized on these opportunities, knocking down 7 on their 12 free throws. The Banyan's second quarter adjustments kept them in the game, and they went into the break trailing 21-38.
The team continued to improve in the second half.
Joselish Depool made her mark from downtown, connecting on two of her three attempts in the third. The rest of the squad also chipped in, and the Banyans shot 42.9% from the field in the quarter, their highest of the game.
The fourth period of play was the most impressive of the game for New College. The Banyans were scorching hot on offense, shooting 55.6% from the field and 100% from the free throw line. The Mighty Banyans were also stellar on the defensive end, holding the Mariner offense to 28.6% from the field while forcing four turnovers. New College won the quarter 16-12, but ultimately fell short at the buzzer, losing 69-51.
Tatiana Jackson had an impressive performance, scoring 19 points to go along with 4 rebounds and 5 assists.
Joselish Depool added 13 points on 3-7 shooting from beyond the ark.
Each player for NCF played a major role, with everyone playing over 19 minutes and scoring a basket on the night.
"We struggled out the gates but turned things around quickly," said NCF head coach Brian Cruz. "The girls were very impressive for the rest of the game. The scoreboard doesn't reflect the amount of effort and work the girls put into the game. Five of our six girls played over thirty minutes and never once let it affect them. This is a big step forward, and we are very proud of the way our girls performed tonight."
The Mighty Banyans are back in action on Sat. Dec. 2, at Warner University.
