TRINITY, Fla. - The New College of Florida women's basketball team picked up a big win over Trinity College last night.
The Banyan's (8-12) defeated Trinity Baptist for their second win in a row, gaining momentum as they move towards the final stretch of their inaugural season.
Trinity Baptist opened the afternoon showcasing their lightning pace of play. The Tigers forced seven NCF turnovers, leading to transition opportunities and added time of possession. The Banyan offense, while efficient, played at a much slower place, allowing the Tigers to attempt 10 more free throws in the first quarter. This difference allowed the Tigers to jump ahead early, leading NCF 23-16 at the end of the first period.
New College turned the corner in the second period. The Banyan offense knocked down 50% of their shots from the field.
Jadyn Lattimore and
Gwen Tsoukalas attacked the paint from the perimeter, putting the Tigers in foul trouble and New College at the free-throw line. The Banyan's executed at the stripe, going 9-12 from the line.
New College's offensive charged helped them take a 43-25 lead into the half.
Both the Banyan's and Tiger's offense flourished in the third quarter.
Trinity College shot the cover off the ball, knocking down 62% of their shots from inside the arc and 42.9% from downtown.
New College, while not as efficient, tallied 25 points in the third quarter.
Gwen Tsoukalas scored 10 points on 4-7 shooting, with 6 other Banyan's also connecting on shots in the third quarter alone.
The Mighty Banyan defense helped them pull away in the last period of play. NCF held the Tigers to 4-17 shooting from the field. NCF also executed well on the offensive end, scoring 25 points on 58% shooting. New College of Florida's offense helped them pull away in the final minutes, beating Trinity College 93-77.
Sierra Moore dominated the game on both ends of the floor, scoring 18 points and grabbing 21 rebounds.
Five other Banyan's scored in double figures, with
Gwen Tsoukalas leading the scoring 20 points.
The Banyan's are back in action on Fri. Feb 2, at Pensacola Christian College.
