New College men's soccer beats the Florida National Conquistadors 2-1 to move to .500 on the season.
After a narrow 1-0 victory against Ave Maria a few days prior, the Banyans faced off against the
Conquistadors in an attempt to win back-to-back home games for the first time all season.
The first half was dominated by defensive play, with the Banyans unable to get anything going on the
offensive side of the ball. Florida National out-gained the home team with 10-1 shots on goal exiting the
first half. Excellent defensive play, including five saves from New College keeper
Mathis Leveque, kept
the game scoreless at the half, but head coach Glodi Konga still felt some adjustments needed to be
made.
"We felt they were running around us in the first half and the guys were lost," remarked Konga after the
game. "So we readjusted some of the ways we needed to press them and we were able to get some
second half opportunities that fell our way. The boys did a great job."
Whatever adjustments were made at the half proved to be successful as the Banyans notched two goals
in the second half, only allowing one goal off a penalty kick on their way to a 2-1 victory.
"Overall the boys did really well," shared Konga. "We made a few subs towards the end to get some
more energy on the field, get a few fresh legs. We had to defend hard all game, but the boys did really
well and I'm really proud of them."
Leading the offensive attack were
Alexander Greaves and
Kais Sabic, who were each responsible for a
goal during the contest. Greaves' goal came off a penalty kick, while Sabic was assisted by Fabian Donal.
The increased offensive production gave Leveque a lighter second half, but he still finished the night
with six saves.
"A win like this gives you a sense of belief that everything is possible," said Konga when asked about the
schedule ahead. "We really needed that cause we are going to be on the road three times after this. So
we take what we learned from today, experience a bit of growth, and we take that on to the next three
games."
