BRADENTON, Fla. - New College men's basketball fell just short of what would have been a massive comeback victory at home against the Florida College Falcons.
Entering the contest, the Banyans had just suffered a heartbreaking road loss to St. Thomas University, snapping a four game win streak. The Falcons had won three of their last four games but only had a 8-14 regular season record.
The season opener rematch started off with a healthy back and forth from each team. The two squads took turns with the lead before the Falcons went on a nine point run right before halftime, ending the first half with a 45-36 lead.
New College struggled after the break, allowing their opponent to build upon their lead. With 10 minutes to play in the match, the Falcons had a 19 point lead over the home team. Fortunately for the Banyans, that was as large as their deficit would get, as they mounted a comeback that would bring the game down to its final seconds. After a costly Falcons penalty, New College had the ball with three seconds down two points. The valiant comeback attempt came up short after a Banyan turned over the ball as the clock hit zero, ending the game with a final score of 98-96.
Charlie Yoder was a bright spot on offense, scoring 34 points and six assists.
Jack Scott led the team in rebounds with 10.
Following the loss, the Banyans will return to action at home on Wednesday, January 29th to play the Ave Maria University Gyrenes.
