The New College of Florida Mighty Banyans fell short to the Keiser University Seahawks 68-46 on Saturday afternoon.
In the first quarter, the Banyans were able to keep the score close, first off of an early three pointer from Gwen Tsoukalas which opened the scoring for New College, and then a great kick by Sierra Moore allowed Halle Shelt to drain her first three of the contest. At the end of the first quarter the Banyans trailed the Seahawks by five.
In the second quarter, the Banyans hit a speed bump out of gates mustering three points in the first seven and a half minutes out of the quarter. By the end of the second quarter, Halle Shelt led the team in the second quarter with 5 points with Sierra Moore and Camilla Zbynski picking up assists.
The Seahawk barrage of points in the second quarter was led by Jasmyn Hale who scored 7 points in the second quarter as Keiser opened a 15 point halftime lead.
The Banyans came out of the first half giving up a 6-0 run, but finally settled down as the quarter went on, going on a 10-2 run of their own, with four different Banyans scoring during that run. Opening with a three pointer from Carson Defries, who provided a spark off the bench with 5 points and 2 assists in the game.
In the fourth quarter the Banyans fought hard to fight back, but with two threes from Seahawk guard Avrie Schmidt, Keiser opened up their lead to a 22 point victory by the time the final buzzer sounded.
For New College, Halle Shelt led the team with 12 points, while Camila Zbynski led the way in assists with 5, and Sierra Moore grabbed 10 boards to cap off another double double on the season.
The Banyans will travel to Miami Gardens, Florida to face Florida Memorial University on Wednesday at 5:30.Â
