Mya Nemechek made program history for New College of Florida by becoming the first All-American in school history after a sixth-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle finals at the NAIA Women's Swimming and Diving National Championship in Elkhart, Indiana Friday.
"I'm so thankful to have the opportunity to become the first All-American at New College," Nemecheck said after the race.
To earn All-America status in the NAIA, a swimmer must place eighth or better in a championship final. Nemechek surpassed that standard with a standout performance, touching the wall in 1:53.38.
Nemechek's achievement marks another major milestone for the Mighty Banyans. She is one of three New College swimmers to qualify for nationals, joining juniors
Michaela Hickok and
Dominique Cos to form the first group of national qualifiers in program history.
Nemechek became the first national qualifier in New College athletics after meeting qualifying standards in three events, helping establish the foundation for the program's rapid rise on the national stage.
