Sarasota, Fla. - NCF Softball earned a series sweep of Florida Memorial over the weekend to improve to 26-12 overall and 11-7 in Sun Conference play.
Saturday, the Mighty Banyans honored five seniors in a Senior Day ceremony in
Samantha Suarez,
Rylie Harwood, Ariana Thomason,
Madison Garcia and
Cheyenne Waddell.
Game 1
New College of Florida defeated Florida Memorial 13-3 in Friday's series opener.
NCF took an early lead in the first inning when
Mackenzie Mathers singled home
Rylie Harwood.
The Banyans broke the game open in the second, scoring six runs behind RBI hits from
Kaitlin Kohlenberg, Harwood, Mathers and
Samantha Suarez to extend the lead to 7-0.
New College continued to add on in the third.
Hannah Hatton delivered a two-run double, and Harwood highlighted the inning with a two-run home run as the lead grew to 13-0.
Florida Memorial scored once in the fourth and added two more in the fifth, but New College maintained control throughout.
Isabella Yazzetti earned the win in the circle, allowing one run over 4.2 innings with six strikeouts.
Game 2
New College of Florida secured a 6-1 victory over Florida Memorial in Game 2 of the series in its first of two on Senior Day.
NCF opened the scoring in the second inning as Waddell lifted a sacrifice fly to bring home Suarez for a 1-0 lead.
The Banyans added to the lead in the third when Garcia singled home
Karyna Lewis, pushing the advantage to 2-0.
The game broke open in the fourth inning. Thomason launched a solo inside-the-park home run to right field, and Garcia followed later in the inning with a two-run single to extend the lead to 5-0. Suarez later scored on an error to cap the four-run frame and make it 6-0.
Florida Memorial got on the board in the sixth inning with an RBI single from Kamille Lucas, but that would be the only run allowed.
Garcia led the offense with three hits and three RBI, while Thomason added the home run. Suarez scored twice and reached base four times.
Kendall Rubel earned the win, tossing 5.1 innings and allowing one run on two hits with four strikeouts.
Dani Ebert closed the game with 1.2 scoreless innings.
Game 3
NCF completed the sweep with a 10-2 win over Florida Memorial in Game 3 of the series finale Saturday.
New College wasted no time getting on the board in the first inning. Suarez delivered a two-run single and later in the inning,
Kira McDonough added an RBI fielder's choice before
Tori Goodell lifted a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0.
The Banyans added two more in the second as Harwood singled home Lewis and
Ashlynn Sentner to extend the lead to 6-0.
New College broke the game open in the fourth inning, taking advantage of multiple errors.
Sydney Rich scored on a miscue before
Maya Moro added an RBI single and Avery
Arrington followed with another RBI knock to push the lead to 10-0.
Florida Memorial scored twice in the fifth inning, but the early deficit proved too much to overcome.
Harwood finished with two hits and two RBI, while Suarez added two RBI. Lewis scored three runs and reached base multiple times, and Rich crossed the plate twice.
Isabella Yazzetti earned the win, tossing 3.0 scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Rich added 1.2 scoreless innings while Waddell posted her first career strikeout in 0.1 inning of work.
Up Next: NCF will visit Fort Lauderdale for a doubleheader Tuesday and then head to Ave Maria for a weekend series next Friday and Saturday.
