AUGUSTA, Ga. - The Mighty Banyan's women's basketball lost in 57-58 in heartbreaking fashion at Paine College.
The Banyan's (5-11) lost a close game to Paine College after erasing an 18 point Lions lead late in the third quarter.
New College of Florida opened the game with an impressive display of offense. The Banyans, led by
Gwen Tsoukalas and
Jadyn Lattimore, drove the offense. The duo scored 13 of the Banyan's first 18 points, and helped NCF hold an 18-15 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Banyans knocked down 8 of the 12 first period jump shots, as well as scoring twice from the free throw line.
The Mighty Banyan offense struggled in the second frame. NCF knocked down just 1 of their 12 attempts in the second quarter, scoring 4 points in the frame thanks to a
Gwen Tsoukalas three. The Lion offense improved on their first quarter struggle. Paine knocked down 4 of their 6 three point attempts, leading Paine to a 31-22 lead at the half.
The Mighty Banyan's impressed throughout the second half of play. After trailing by 18 points with 6 minutes remaining in the game, the New College offense brought them back.
Gwen Tsoukalas knocked down six of her nine shot attempts in the second half, scoring 20 points in the second to give her a season high 27 for the game.
Franchesca Derilus and
Sierra Moore combined to shoot 6-7 from the field and scored 15 points.
The New College offense continued to keep them in the game in the fourth quarter. The Banyans shot 63.2% from the field in the fourth quarter. Their defense, allowed the Lions to convert on 8 of the 22 shots in the second half and forcing 8 turnovers.
Ultimately, the Banyan's second half surge fell just short, with Paine College winning 58-57.
The Banyans are back in action tomorrow, Sat Jan. 20, at Bob Jones University.
