JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Mighty Banyan women's basketball team picked up an impressive 65-63 win over Trinity Baptist Saturday afternoon.
The Banyan's (7-12) struggled in the first quarter.
The Mighty Banyan's connected on just 1 of their 14 first quarter field goal attempts, shooting their lowest percentage of the season in a quarter. New College struggled to maintain possession of the ball, recording 6 turnovers. Trinity Baptist capitalized on New College's woes and jumped out to an early nine point lead.
NCF responded with authority to begin the second period. The Banyan's scored 22 second quarter points, outscoring the Eagles by 11 in the quarter. New College pulled away from the free throw line, making 7 of their 8 attempts.
Franchesca Derilus and
Gwen Tsoukalas led the charge for NCF, scoring 6 points a piece. Six players scored for NCF in the quarter, helping them go into the halfway mark leading 29-27.
New College continued to thrive on the offensive end in the third quarter.
Sierra Moore took over the interior in the third, scoring 6 points on 75% shooting and grabbing 4 rebounds.
Gwen Tsoukalas also added 6 points to go along with 2 rebounds and 1 assist. The New College offense knocked down 50% of their attempts from the field and from beyond the arc.
The New College defense held strong through the third period. The Banyan's held the Eagles to 18.2% shooting from the field in the quarter.
New College capped off the game with another efficient quarter on the offensive end. The Banyan's connected om 60% of their field goal attempts in the quarter, with all of them coming from inside the arc. The New College defense had another stellar quarter, forcing Trinity Baptist to 31.8% shooting from the floor. NCF's impressive defense and continued offensive excellence helped them hold on through the final buzzer, beating the Eagles 65-53.
Gwen Tsoukalas led NCF in scoring with 18 points.
Sierra Moore impressed with a double-double, recording 15 points and 13 rebounds.
Tatiana Jackson and
Jadyn Lattimore also scored in double figures, scoring 10 points each.
The Banyan's are back in action on Tues. Jan 30, at Trinity College.
