BRADENTON, Fla. - The Banyans flashed their offensive power against Webber International on the way to their first playoff victory in program history.
The team started slow, falling to the Warriors 25-23 in the first set. The two teams played each other closely in the second set, but New College pulled ahead late, winning 25-18.
Outside hitter
Kaja Szuba spoke about the slow start after the game, saying, "We know how to come back quickly; we are a really good comeback team. We are just always supporting each other. It's easy to come back with this team."
The Banyans used the momentum from their second-set win to overpower the Webber defense, which lost its footing in the later sets. New College won set three 25-14 and set four 27-25.
After the rocky start, New College unleashed their offensive firepower, led by
Kaja Szuba and
Cassidy Casey. Casey finished the match with 17 kills, while Szuba followed closely behind with 16.
Luisa Hoffmann led the defense with five total blocks.
Following the victory, the Banyans advanced to the semifinals of the Sun Conference tournament, where they will face the 28-0 St. Thomas University Bobcats.
"We are just going to play our game," Szuba said when asked about the match up. "Don't focus on what they are ranked. Just stay aggressive, stay smart, and stay together."
The New College Banyans will head on the road for their semifinal matchup, where they will meet the Bobcats on Friday, November 15th.Â
