MELBOURNE, Fla. - The Mighty Banyan softball team finished up their eventful weekend at the Space Coast tournament with a win over Cornerstone University.
The Banyans (3-20) played 4 games over the duration of the tournament. New College dropped both games on Friday, losing 1-0 to Lawrence Tech (Mich.) and 2-6 to No. 16 Indiana Wesleyan. The Banyans lost game one on Saturday to Cornerstone University (Mich.) before winning their final game of the tournament against Lourdes.
Jayleigh Totten pitched the opening game of the tournament for NCF. Totten pitched 6 innings, allowing 1 earned run and 9 hits.
Madison Garcia and
Lillian Urbina recorded the only two hits for the Banyans in game 1.
New College hosted No. 16 Indiana Wesleyan for game two on Friday. The Wildcats jumped out to an early lead, scoring 2 runs in the first inning. The Banyans scored their first run of the day in the third inning, bringing the Wildcat lead to one. The Banyans scored again in the sixth inning on a single from Jalyssa Nedesma, keeping the Banyans in the ballgame.
Indiana Wesleyan pulled away in the sixth inning, scoring three runs to put the game out of reach.
The Banyans were back in action early Saturday afternoon with a game against Cornerstone University (Mich.). The Cornerstone offense opened the afternoon firing on all cylinders. The Golden Eagles put up three runs in the first two innings of action, taking an early lead. The Mighty Banyans responded in the third inning.
Jalyssa Nedesma and Mady Dutton drove in two runs in the third. Jalyssa Nedesma laced a single down the third base line, scoring
Ke'Asia Waters from third base. Mady Dutton followed up Nedesma with a triple to right center field, scoring Nedesma for the Banyans second run.
LIly Urbina drove in another run in the fourth inning, tying the game at 3.
Cornerstone extended their lead to two on a homer in the fifth inning, putting the pressure back on NCF. The Banyans responded in the bottom of the sixth inning. Jalyssa Nedesma and Mady Duttin drove in another two runs in the sixth, giving NCF their first lead of the ball game. The Banyans gave up their lead in final inning, dropping a close one 7-6.
The Banyans suited up for their final game of the weekend against Lourdes University.
Both teams struggled to score through the first five innings of action. The Banyans broke the stalemate in the bottom of the fifth inning, exploding for 6 runs.
D'lani Navarro scored the first run of the game on a throwing error from the third baseman, giving NCF the lead.

Kira McDonough, putting the Banyans up 2. Madi Dutton and
Ella Kraszewski drove in 3 more runs, keeping the Banyan offense rolling. Nedesma drove in the final run of the inning on a ground out to third, putting the Banyans up 6 going into the sixth inning.
The Banyans maintained their lead through the final two innings of play, capturing a 6-4 win in their final game of the tournament.
The Mighty Banyans are back in action on Friday, March 15 at home against Trinity Baptist College.
