SARASOTA, Fla. - NCF Men's Tennis freshman Timothy Phung was named to the 20-man Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) singles All-American team Monday, adding another honor to celebrate his outstanding debut season at New College.
Phung, a Bradenton native who earned second-team All-Sun Conference honors, helped lead the Mighty Banyans to a 9-9 record this spring which included a 5-2 mark in Sun Conference play, good for a third-place finish behind only Keiser and Southeastern, a trip to the Sun Conference Tournament Semifinals and a bid to the NAIA National Men's Tennis Championships, where the Mighty Banyans were seeded 15th in the country.
The nation's No. 20 ranked player in the ITA rankings, Phung went 7-7 in singles play, playing at the No. 1 spot for the Mighty Banyans. He earned notable victories over fellow ITA All-American Piero Fernandez of Southeastern, No. 29 ITA-ranked Hugo Abril of Arizona Christian in the NAIA National Tournament and No. 64 ITA-ranked Jose Andres Perez Perez of Oakland City.
Phung becomes the first ITA All-American in NCF Men's or Women's Tennis history.
