SARASOTA, Fla. - New College of Florida swept The Sun Conference Cross Country Runner of the Week awards following a historic season-opening performance at Friday's Panther XC Invitational.

Freshman Mireille Gomez was named the conference's Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week, while junior Cole Fleming earned Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week honors.

Gomez made history in her collegiate debut, finishing second in the women's 5K with a time of 21:17.98. Her runner-up performance made her the first race medalist in NCF history and marked the best individual finish by a Mighty Banyan runner.

She helped lead the NCF women to a fourth-place team. The Mighty Banyans recorded an average time of 24:45.

Fleming also delivered a record-setting performance in his NCF debut, winning the men's 5K in 16:42.66. He crossed the finish line nearly 15 seconds ahead of the runner-up to become the first individual race winner in program history.

Behind Fleming, the Mighty Banyan men captured the first team championship in program history finishing 25 points ahead of runner-up Lake-Sumter State.

Fleming led a group of six NCF medalists, the first six race medalists in program history. The Mighty Banyans placed six runners among the top seven finishers and seven inside the top eight.

NCF returns to competition Sept. 11 at the St. Thomas University Bobcat Invitational in Miami Gardens.
