Box Score 4 Jacksonville, Fla. – New College softball opened their season with a 4-0 finish in the Edward Waters Invitational.
The Mighty Banyans' first matchup of the tournament was against Edward Waters University in a game that came down to its final inning. New College was down 3-2 in the seventh inning when the offense came to life, generating four runs to give the Banyans a three-run lead. In the bottom of the seventh, the defense bent but refused to break, shutting down Edward Waters' attack to end the game with a 6-5 victory.
Jade Kruse led her team with four hits, while
Ke'Asia Waters tallied four RBIs. Defensively, catcher
Saremi Flores led the way with eight putouts.
The second game of Friday's tournament was against Paine College, where the Mighty Banyans clinched a second victory in a 5-3 contest.
Day two of the event saw a matchup against Trinity Baptist College, which allowed the Banyans to unleash their full offensive arsenal. The young squad registered 15 runs, aided by an impressive 18 hits, while only holding their opponent to three.
Haley Rosenbaum led her team with four hits and three RBIs, while
Arianna Thomason responsible for a team-high four runs. The 15-3 win provided the 3-0 Banyans with the momentum needed to complete the tournament sweep against Savannah State University. A 14-hit game from New College led them to a 5-4 triumph, which was capped off by another defensive hold in the bottom of the seventh. Rosenbaum repeated as the team's hit leader, once again registering four.
Over the four-game stretch, New College put up 31 runs while holding their opponents to 15. The impressive performance hopes to serve as a catalyst for more victories ahead, as the Banyans will stay on the road to face Florida National University in a doubleheader on Tuesday, February 4th.
