SARASOTA, Fla. - NCF senior catcher
Matthew Merk and sophomore pitcher
Corbin Gilmore have been named Second-Team All-Sun Conference honorees.
Merk, a Lockport, Illinois native, slashed .321/.422/.426 on the season, hitting two home runs and ranking fourth on the team with 27 RBI's. Behind the plate, he caught 26 runners stealing and posted a .981 fielding percentage, making 49 starts behind the plate.
Gilmore, an Arcadia, Florida product, appeared in 16 games, making five starts. His ERA of 3.86 was the best of any qualifier on the team and he also picked up a team-leading seven wins on the mound, a single-season program record. He added 29 strikeouts on just 14 walks over 49.0 innings of work.
The 6-foot-3 right-hander was named the Sun Conference Pitcher of The Week on March 30 after helping guide the Mighty Banyans to a series split with No. 22 ranked Keiser by entering the save in NCF's 4-3 Game 2 win Friday as he entered in the top of the seventh with a one-run lead and was able to shut the door, striking out the potential go-ahead run to end the game. In Game 4 of the series, he got the start for the Mighty Banyans and earned the win in a run-rule shortened contest as he tossed 4.2 innings in which he did not allow an earned run, struck out two Seahawks, walked only one, and gave up just three hits.
NCF finished the season 22-27 overall and 8-20 in Sun Conference play.
