Andrew Wingreen has announced the Mighty Banyans' coaching staff for the 2026-27 season, welcoming assistant coaches
Alex Cummings and
Devin Gilligan while retaining returning assistants
Scott Townsend and
Alex Sommers.
Cummings and Gilligan add experience from NCAA Division I, the NAIA, USA Basketball, and professional basketball to the coaching staff, while Townsend returns for his fourth season at New College as Assistant Men's Basketball Coach and Head Coach of the Development Team and Sommers enters his second season as an assistant coach with the Mighty Banyans.
Alex Cummings
Cummings joins New College after serving as an assistant coach at Webber International University from 2022-25. During the 2023-24 season, he helped guide the Warriors to an NAIA National Tournament appearance while contributing to recruiting, player development, scouting, and the day-to-day operations of the program.
Prior to Webber International, Cummings served as a volunteer assistant coach at the University of South Florida under former head coach Brian Gregory. He also spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Westerville Central High School in Ohio from 2019-21.
A graduate of Ohio University, Cummings began his coaching career as a student manager for the Bobcats men's basketball program under former head coach Saul Phillips from 2017-19.
Cummings and his wife, Emily, are excited to join the New College community. Emily serves as New College's Head Swim & Dive Coach.
"We're excited to welcome Alex to our coaching staff," Wingreen said. "He is a perfect fit for the culture we're building at New College. Alex is extremely organized, detail-oriented, and thoroughly prepared in everything he does. His previous experience coaching in the Sun Conference gives him valuable insight into our league, and we're confident he'll make an immediate impact as we continue building our program."
Devin Gilligan
Gilligan joins the Mighty Banyans while continuing to compete with USA Basketball as a member of Team Phoenix on the FIBA 3x3 Men's World Tour.
Prior to joining the coaching staff, Gilligan enjoyed a nine-year professional playing career in Sweden, Canada, Colombia, Indonesia, Norway, and Japan. He was also selected in the NBA G League Draft by the Delaware 87ers.
Before turning professional, Gilligan starred at Southern New Hampshire University, helping lead the Penmen to three NCAA Division II Tournament appearances. As a senior in 2016-17, he averaged 20.2 points and 6.8 rebounds per game while leading Southern New Hampshire to a 21-9 record.
Gilligan also gained collegiate coaching experience during the 2021-22 season as an assistant coach at Southern New Hampshire. His background as a collegiate standout, professional player, and coach brings valuable experience and perspective to the Mighty Banyans.
"Devin brings an incredible amount of experience from competing at the highest levels of basketball," Wingreen said. "The fact that he is still actively competing with USA Basketball gives our student-athletes a unique opportunity to learn from someone who is applying those lessons every day. His professional experience, passion for player development, and understanding of the mental side of the game will have a tremendous impact on our program and the growth of our players."
